BAROQUE NAPLES
Thematic itineraries to discover the baroque Naples.
1) We will start the route from Piazza Dante, to cross Port'Alba and admire the baroque facades of numerous churches and noble palaces. We will arrive to the Church of Pietrasanta and to that of S. Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio in Arco, and then stop to visit the Basilica of S. Paolo Maggiore; on the opposite side of the road, we will visit the Church of S. Gregorio Armeno, whose interior is richly decorated in baroque style. We will conclude the tour at the Cathedral, where we will visit the Chapel of St. Gennaro, one of the highest expressions of Neapolitan Baroque.
2) We will visit the Cathedral of Naples, inside which some of the best examples of Baroque art are preserved, we will enter the Chapel of the Treasure of St. Gennaro, to admire the seventeenth-century paintings of Domenichino, Lanfranco and Ribera, then continuing in the scenographic Chapel of S. Restituta. From here we will reach the Pio Monte della Misericordia, a seventeenth-century institution that houses the famous painting by Caravaggio entitled "The Seven Works of Mercy", to visit the chapel and the other rooms decorated with works of the Neapolitan Baroque.
3) We will start from Porta San Gennaro on Via Foria, to enter the heart of the Sanita' district, where we will visit the beautiful baroque church of S. Maria della Sanità and the noble palaces of the district, Palazzo dello Spagnolo and Palazzo Sanfelice, famous for the monumental staircases with hawk wings. We will continue in the direction of the Cathedral, which we will visit to admire in particular the Chapel of S. Gennaro, a fine example of Neapolitan Baroque, whose decoration work artists such as Cosimo Fanzago, Domenichino, Lanfranco.
4) We will meet in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo to start the tour by visiting the church that gives the name to the square, a fine example of Baroque architecture, decorated inside by Cosimo Fanzago, Luca Giordano, Jusepe de Ribera, Massimo Stanzione and other artists of the Neapolitan seventeenth century. Continuing along Spaccanapoli, we will arrive at the Church of S. Gregorio Armeno, whose interior is sumptuously decorated in Baroque style, and then conclude the tour with a visit to the Cathedral of Naples and the beautiful Chapel of the Treasury of S. Gennaro.
