ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF PAESTUM

The ancient Greek colony dedicated to the god Poseidon remains intact today with its monumental temples, the amphitheater and the paved streets. An ancient legend tells that Jason, at the head of the expedition of the Argonauts, stopped at the mouth of the Sele where he founded a sanctuary in honor of Hera. It is here that, across the river, Greek settlers from Sibari founded Poseidonia around 600 B.C. The guided tour starts from the archaeological area to visit the temples, the square intended for political and commercial activities, the amphitheater, some shops and houses. We will continue the visit in the Archaeological Museum, to retrace the history of the Greek city through the artifacts kept inside, including architectural materials from the temples, Greek vases decorated with mythological episodes, but above all the famous Tomb of the Diver dating back to 470 BC, an exceptional document for its uniqueness.
