THE ACROPOLIS OF CUMA
Founded in VIII BC, Cuma was the oldest Greek colony in the West surrounded by an imposing fortification wall in blocks of tuff. The archaeological park currently includes the acropolis, sacred area home to the oldest temples of the colony, at the foot of which extends the agora on which the public buildings open. What makes the site of Cuma unique is the presence of the so-called Sybil's Cave, a dark place where the prophetic oracle foretold its prophecies. The guided tour includes the upper part of the park currently open to the public with the acropolis with its temples, the Sybil's Cave and the panoramic terrace from which you can enjoy a splendid view of the gulf.

The visit continues towards the Cathedral that stands above the ruins of the ancient Capitolium, the most important temple of the Roman city dedicated to the worship of the Emperor Augustus. The Archaeological Museum of the Phleagrean Fields, hosted inside an Aragonese fortress, preserves the most significant findings for the reconstruction of the history of Cuma, Pozzuoli, Baia and other centers of the Phlegraean area. The guided tour runs through the many rooms of the museum containing pottery, grave goods and sculptures intended to embellish villas and public buildings of the Greek-Roman period, including the sections dedicated to the Acropolis of Cuma and the Rione Terra di Pozzuoli. We continue with a visit to the Archaeological Park of the Terme di Baia, to visit the remains of public and private spa facilities, which made Baia the favorite spa resort of the Roman patricians.

BACOLI
Miseno is a crater formed in prehistoric times and, right here, it was established the most imposing Roman naval base from 27 B.C. The most significant monument of this area is certainly the Piscina Mirabilis, a colossal reservoir built as a terminal of the great Augustan aqueduct of Serino, a work carried out for the water supply of the imperial fleet. The visit takes place in the ancient cistern excavated entirely in the tuff, to admire its imposing structure with 5 naves, able to hold up to 12,000 cubic meters of water. Today the enormous empty space, illuminated by a weak light, exudes an extraordinary suggestion, representing a tangible symbol of the magnificence of the ancient Romans.
The visit lasts about 20 minutes, so it is advisable to combine it to the itinerary of Cuma if you are travelling by car.
Free entry to the site.
