THE ACROPOLIS OF CUMA

Cuma

Founded in the eighth century BC, Cuma was the oldest Greek colony of the west surrounded by an imposing fortification wall made of tufa rock. The archaeological park currently includes the Acropolis, the sacred area with the oldest temples of the colony, while the agorà with its public buildings is located in the lower city. To make unique the archaeological site of Cuma is, however, the presence of the so-called Sybil's Cave, a macabre place where the prophetess gave her oracles. The guided tour includes the visit to the hill currently open to the public, with the Acropolis and its temples, the Sibyl's Cave, the panoramic view of the beach and the lower city.

BACOLI

Bacoli

Very few remains of the port are still visible today and it's the same for the ancient town of Miseno. The largest monument is certainly the Piscina Mirabilis, a colossal cistern built as a terminal of the great Augustan aqueduct of Serino, made for the water supply of the imperial fleet. We will enter in the ancient cistern deeply cut into the tufa rock and admire its impressive five naves, capable of holding up to 12,000 cubic meters of water. Today the huge empty space, illuminated by a dim light, represents a tangible symbol of the magnificence of the Roman times.

The visit lasts about 20 minutes, so it is advisable to combine it to the itinerary of Cuma if you are travelling by car. The entrance to the site is free.

Upon request it's possible to rent a Mercedes minivan with driver at disposal.
